Frontdesk AI Review (2026): Pricing, Features & Honest Verdict
Frontdesk AI is an AI receptionist and front office platform that answers calls, texts, web chats and forms, then books the appointment and syncs it to your CRM. Verdict: a complete product at a fair price, with an entry tier that cannot answer a phone. Best for: small service businesses. Price: From $16/mo (free plan: no). Rating: 7/10.
What is Frontdesk AI?
Frontdesk AI is built by AI Front Desk, Inc. and sells what it calls an AI workforce for the front office. The pitch is that a plumber, a clinic or a law firm should not lose a lead because nobody picked up at 7pm. The AI answers the call, works out what the caller wants, books them in, texts the confirmation and writes the whole thing into your CRM. Three makers are credited on the launch: Ben Holding, Aadhrik Kuila and Ruchir Baronia.
What separates this from the dozen other AI receptionists we looked at is scope. Most of them answer phones. Frontdesk bundles voice, web chat, two-way SMS, email drafting, website forms, an AI-native CRM, ticketing and sequence automations into one subscription. The company positions it against running GoHighLevel and HubSpot side by side, and on feature coverage that comparison holds up. The AI picks up in “Under 1s”, speaks “20+ languages natively”, and integrates natively with HubSpot, Salesforce, Pipedrive, Google Calendar, Outlook, Calendly, Zapier, Make, Twilio, Slack and Stripe. Enterprise adds SOC 2 Type II, HIPAA-ready configuration and PII redaction.
What are Frontdesk AI’s key features?
A receptionist that books the appointment during the call
The core loop is answer, qualify, book. The AI captures intent, urgency, service area, budget and timeline in natural conversation, then “Books appointments live during the call” and confirms by SMS. Configurable rules transfer VIP or urgent callers straight to a human. Every call is transcribed and mapped to structured CRM fields automatically, so the notes exist whether or not anyone remembers to write them.
One inbox across voice, SMS, chat, email and forms
A lead that phones on Monday and fills in a web form on Wednesday is one record, not two. Sequence automation ties the channels together, so a new lead can get a text immediately and an email the next day if they do not respond. Sequence workflows are unlimited on every plan including Basic, which is unusually generous and the main reason the platform earns the “front office” label rather than “phone answering service.”
Transparent overage credits that never expire
Frontdesk publishes its whole overage rate card, which most competitors do not. One credit equals one cent. Voice costs 25 credits a minute, SMS 4 credits a message, a chatbot conversation 5 credits, a form submission 4 credits. If you run out, auto-reload buys 1,000 credits for $10, and purchased credits never expire. The monthly overage pool that comes with Business does expire, so the two pots behave differently and the pricing page says so plainly.
A published competitor price table on their own site
Frontdesk lists its rivals’ prices next to its own and dates the check. It cites ai-receptionist.com from $14 a month, Allo from $18, AgentZap from $25 to $899, NextPhone from $199 to $299 and Imagicle from $25 to $3,000, all “last checked August 2026.” Vendors almost never do this. It does not make the comparison neutral, but publishing dated competitor pricing you can go and verify is a good sign about how the rest of the numbers are handled.
How much does Frontdesk AI cost?
Frontdesk AI starts at $20 a month on Basic, or $16 billed annually. Business-in-a-Box, the plan that actually answers phone calls, is $99 a month or $79 annually. Partner and Enterprise is custom. Both paid plans come with a 7-day free trial and there is no permanent free tier.
The annual discount claim checks out. Frontdesk advertises “Save 20%”. Basic goes $20 to $16, which is exactly 20%. Business goes $99 to $79, which is 20.2%, so you get 20 cents a month more than advertised. Small, but it is in the customer’s favour and that is rarer than the reverse.
Now price the included usage at the company’s own credit rate, and the two tiers separate hard. Basic gives you 10 chatbot conversations, 40 SMS and 30 form submissions a month. At 5, 4 and 4 credits each that is 330 credits, or $3.30 of metered usage, for $20 a month. Business gives you 200 voice minutes, 100 chatbot conversations, 400 SMS and 300 form submissions, which is 8,300 credits, plus a 1,000-credit overage pool. That is $93 of usage for $99, and on annual billing $93 of usage for $79. Per dollar spent, Business buys about five and a half times more metered work than Basic does.
The reason is not hidden. Basic includes zero voice minutes, and Frontdesk says so on the card: “No voice minutes, so it does not answer calls.” It is labelled “Evaluation / Learning” and sold “For individuals exploring AI.” That is honest positioning. It is also a $20 monthly demo sitting next to a 7-day free trial, and we struggle to name the buyer for it. If you want to evaluate, take the trial. If you want a receptionist, you need the $99 plan. Basic occupies the space between those two and does neither job.
One thing to check before you sign. The Basic plan card lists “Unlimited email drafts” and the feature comparison table further down the same page lists “50 drafts/mo” for Basic. Both statements are on the pricing page. Business is 500 drafts a month and only Enterprise is unlimited, so the table is almost certainly the accurate one and the card is wrong. Get it confirmed in writing if email volume matters to you.
The enterprise rate is worth asking about too. Volume pricing takes voice down to “7 credits/min”, or 7 cents, against the standard 25 cents. That is a 3.6x discount, which is a big enough gap that any business doing real call volume should be having the sales conversation rather than stacking overage on Business.
| Plan | Price | Plan Features | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|
| Basic | $20/mo ($16 annually) | 0 voice minutes, 10 chatbot conversations, 40 SMS, 30 form submissions, 2 knowledge base pages, 1 editor seat | Individuals evaluating the platform, not answering calls |
| Business-in-a-Box | $99/mo ($79 annually) | 200 voice minutes, 100 chatbot conversations, 400 SMS, 300 forms, 20 outbound calls/day, 1,000 overage credits, Zapier, 2 editor seats | Growing small businesses that need calls answered |
| Partner / Enterprise | Custom | Volume pricing from 7 credits per voice minute, API access, custom integrations, dedicated account manager, custom data retention | Scaling teams and agencies |
Who is Frontdesk AI best for?
Use Frontdesk AI if you run a small service business where a missed call is a lost job. Home services, clinics, salons, small legal and accounting practices. The $99 plan covers roughly 200 minutes of calls plus chat, SMS, forms and a CRM, and setup is claimed at under five minutes with no new hardware or phone number. If you are currently paying a human answering service, the cost comparison is not close.
Use it too if you are an agency reselling front office automation. The Partner tier includes API access, custom integrations and a dedicated account manager, and the platform is broad enough to be the whole stack for a client rather than one tool in it.
Skip Frontdesk AI if your call volume is high and variable. At 25 cents a minute over the 200 included, a business doing 1,500 minutes a month is paying $99 plus roughly $325 in overage, and at that point you want the enterprise rate or a different vendor. Skip it if you need a human on the line, since this is AI voice and no plan puts a person on the call. And skip Basic entirely. It is not a cheap way in, it is a paid demo.
What are the best Frontdesk AI alternatives?
Goodcall is the closest direct rival and it meters differently, which matters more than the headline price. Starter is $79 a month per agent, or $66 annually, with unlimited minutes and tokens but a cap of 100 unique customers a month and 50 cents per customer after that. Growth is $129 ($108 annually) for 250 customers and Scale is $249 ($208) for 500. If your callers are few and talkative, Goodcall wins on price. If you have many short calls, Frontdesk’s minute-based meter is cheaper.
Smith.ai is the answer when the AI is not good enough. It staffs live people around the clock: Starter is $300 a month for 30 calls, Basic $810 for 90 and Pro $2,100 for 300, with per-call overage from $8.50 to $11.50 and a 30-day money-back guarantee. That is roughly $7 to $10 a call against Frontdesk’s $99 for around 60 to 70 calls of typical length. You are paying ten times more for a human, and for some practices that is correct.
GoHighLevel is the incumbent Frontdesk is arguing with. It is a bigger, older CRM and marketing platform with far deeper automation and agency tooling, and a correspondingly steeper setup. Choose it if you want to build the workflow yourself and Frontdesk if you want it configured in an afternoon.
Final verdict: is Frontdesk AI worth it?
At $79 a month billed annually, Business-in-a-Box is a good deal and we would recommend it without much hedging. You get 200 voice minutes, chat, 400 texts, 300 form leads, a CRM, Zapier and unlimited automation sequences, which prices out at $93 of the company’s own credits for $79. The overage rate card is published, purchased credits never expire, the annual discount is honest, and the vendor publishes dated competitor pricing on its own site. For a small service business losing calls after hours, the payback is fast.
Two things keep it from an 8. The Basic tier at $20 a month cannot answer a phone and hands you $3.30 of metered usage, which makes it a demo with a price tag rather than a real plan. And the pricing page contradicts itself on Basic’s email drafts, saying “Unlimited” on the card and “50 drafts/mo” in the table below. Neither is fatal and both are fixable. Buy Business-in-a-Box on annual billing, take the 7-day trial first, and get the enterprise voice rate quoted the moment your call volume goes past 500 minutes a month.
