Hookest Review (2026): Pricing, Features & Honest Verdict
TLDR
Hookest is a searchable library of viral short-form video openings with engagement numbers, weekly trend emails, Instagram competitor alerts and an MCP server. At $9 a month it is the cheapest tool in the category, but the library is small and Instagram-heavy. Best for: solo creators studying hooks. Price: from $9/mo, free plan yes. Rating: 6.5/10.
What is Hookest?
We found Hookest on Product Hunt, where it finished 7th on 24 September 2026. It is a swipe file for the first few seconds of short-form videos: the jump cut, the scream, the watermelon smash that makes someone stop scrolling. Each saved clip comes with its view, like and comment counts, a trend stage, and an AI read of why the opening works.
The pitch covers TikTok, Instagram Reels and YouTube Shorts. On top of the library sit a weekly email called Trend Radar, Instagram competitor tracking, a virality predictor for your own clips, an MCP server that plugs into Claude, ChatGPT and Gemini, and a separate paid API for developers. It is a lot of surface for a product whose paid plan costs less than a sandwich lunch.
What Are Hookest’s Key Features?
The hook library
When we checked, the library had 516 hooks, filterable by 14 categories, country and date, and sortable by newest or views. Each hook page shows the original creator’s handle, follower count, full caption, audio credit and engagement numbers. The example we opened, a sports videographer’s transition clip, listed 12.4M views, 2.8M likes and 6K comments.
The spread across categories is lopsided. Restaurants and Food had 97 hooks and Cars had 92, while Health had 3, Education had 3 and Stocks and Finance had zero. The largest bucket, with 149 entries, is Other. If you make finance or B2B content, there is almost nothing here for you yet.
Trend stages and comment analysis
This is the part we liked most. Every hook carries a trend status on a five-step scale from New through Rising, Peak and Declining to Faded, with advice attached. Our example was marked Declining with a note that copying it 1:1 is risky and you should reinterpret the pattern instead. That is more useful guidance than a raw view count.
Hook pages also show an emotion radar scored out of 100 per axis and a word cloud of what commenters talked about. For a transition edit, words like edit, transition and song floated to the top, which tells you the audience cared about craft rather than the subject. It is rough, but it points you at the right question.
Competitor Listening and Trend Radar
Competitor Listening lets Pro users add Instagram accounts and get alerts when a post starts outpacing that account’s normal engagement, so a small account with an unusual spike still triggers. TikTok tracking is listed as a roadmap item. Hookest does not publish how many accounts you can track; its FAQ says it depends on your plan, but there is only one paid plan.
Trend Radar is free. You pick categories from the 14 on offer and get one email every Monday with the week’s new hooks in those niches. It is the easiest way to try Hookest without logging in every day.
MCP server, predictor and API
The MCP server, included in Pro, lets you ask an AI assistant to find hooks in a niche or break down why one works. The Virality Hook Predictor takes an MP4 under 40 MB, watches only the opening, and returns a score out of 100 with the part that lost attention. Free accounts get one check.
The public API is a separate product with its own plans, keys, webhooks and credit wallet. The docs publish exact credit costs per endpoint, which is more transparency than most tools manage.
What Is It Like to Use Hookest?
Browsing the library is quick and visual. Cards autoplay, category chips work, and a hook page gives you everything you need to judge an opening in under a minute. Titles like Chimney Dive, Soup Ladle Badminton and Gorilla Charge make it easy to remember what you saw.
What you mostly find is the visual shock opener: crashes, smashes, splashes and hard cuts. That suits product brands, food accounts and editors. If your hooks are spoken lines or on-screen text for a talking-head video, the library has far less to teach you right now.
Every item we inspected came from Instagram. The page data behind the library listed 526 posts, all tagged Instagram, and the TikTok and Shorts hook pages we tried returned errors. The homepage copy about separate TikTok and Shorts tracking reads ahead of what the product currently shows.
Where Does Hookest Fall Short?
The biggest problem is a mixed message about reuse. The homepage FAQ says most clips are free to download and reuse in your own content. The Terms of Service say the opposite: the videos belong to their creators, a hook you see is not yours to republish, and what you may take is the technique, rebuilt with your own footage. Trust the terms.
That matters because Hookest stores full copies of creators’ videos on its own servers and sells a Hook Downloads feature on Pro. Downloading someone else’s clip and dropping it into your Reel can trigger a copyright claim, whatever a marketing page says. Hookest does offer a takedown process for rights holders, but it does not indemnify you.
The same terms ban users from scraping or bulk-downloading Hookest’s library, while the library itself is built from other people’s public posts. How the videos are collected is not explained. We would not build a client workflow that depends on this library staying intact.
Hookest’s own numbers also drift. The homepage says Hookest tracks thousands of hooks daily, and another FAQ answer cites 100 tracked hooks; the library showed 516. The how-it-works page mentions measuring hook rate and hold rate, but the terms describe performance indicators as approximate signals from limited public data, not ad account figures.
Finally, there is no annual plan, no published limit on downloads or tracked competitors, and no refund policy in the terms. The terms do not name the company that runs Hookest either, only an unnamed operator.
How Much Does Hookest Cost?
Hookest starts at $9 a month for Pro, and the free plan is permanent with no card required. Free gets the hook library, Trend Radar and one virality prediction. Pro adds hook downloads, Competitor Listening, the MCP server and ongoing predictions. We found no annual option on the pricing page or in the site’s code.
The public API is priced separately and Pro does not include it. Builder costs $29 a month for 1,000 credits, Growth $99 for 5,000 and Scale $299 for 25,000. Extra credits are $5 per 100 and never expire. A single prediction reserves 20 credits, so Builder covers about 50 predictions a month, and top-ups work out to $1 per prediction.
Against the field, $9 is very cheap. Sandcastles Pro is $49 a month, or $39 billed yearly. Virlo Starter is $49 a month after a free trial. Foreplay, which targets paid ad creative, starts at $59 a month, or $49 billed yearly. Hookest undercuts all three by a wide margin, though each of them does more.
| Plan | Price | Plan Features | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 | Hook library, Trend Radar weekly email, one virality prediction; no downloads, competitor tracking or MCP | Browsing hooks and the Monday email |
| Pro | $9/mo | Adds hook downloads, Instagram Competitor Listening, MCP server and ongoing predictions; limits not published; no API | Solo creators on Instagram |
| API Builder | $29/mo | 1,000 credits a month (about 50 predictions at 20 credits each), keys and webhook | Developers testing the API |
| API Growth | $99/mo | 5,000 credits a month, keys and webhook | Apps with regular hook or prediction calls |
| API Scale | $299/mo | 25,000 credits a month; top-ups $5 per 100 credits on any API plan | High-volume integrations |
Who is Hookest Best For?
Use Hookest if you are a solo creator, a small brand or a video editor on Instagram who wants a cheap, visual feed of openings that are working right now. The free plan and Monday email cost nothing, and $9 for competitor alerts and MCP access is an easy experiment.
Use it too if you already work inside Claude or ChatGPT and want hook data inside that conversation. Very few tools at this price ship an MCP server.
Skip Hookest if you need TikTok or YouTube depth, a large library, or analytics you can defend to a client. Skip it if your niche is finance, education or health, where the library has almost no entries. And skip the download button entirely if you plan to publish other people’s footage.
Best Hookest Alternatives
Sandcastles
Sandcastles is a short-form research and scripting tool with a curated competitor feed, channel audits and its own MCP connector. Pro costs $49 a month, or $39 billed yearly, and tracks up to 150 competitors per workspace. Pick it if you want scripts and published limits, not just a hook gallery.
Virlo
Virlo tracks viral content across TikTok, YouTube Shorts and Reels with research agents, account tracking and exports. Starter costs $49 a month after a free trial and includes 2,000 credits, and Pro is $199. It is the stronger choice if TikTok is your main platform.
Foreplay
Foreplay is a swipe file for paid social ads with a Chrome extension, boards and competitor analysis. Basic costs $59 a month, or $49 billed yearly, with a 7-day free trial. It suits ad teams saving Meta and TikTok ads rather than organic creators.
Final Verdict: Is Hookest Worth It?
Hookest is worth trying because trying it is free. The trend stages, comment word clouds and plain advice on when a format is too stale to copy are smart touches, and $9 a month with an MCP server is a price no competitor we checked comes close to. As a daily inspiration feed for Instagram, it does the job.
We would not pay for it expecting a full cross-platform research tool. The library is small, Instagram-only in practice, and its reuse messaging contradicts its own terms. Take the free plan and the Monday email, study the techniques, and upgrade only if Instagram competitor alerts are worth $9 to you. Never republish the clips.
