thestory.run Review (2026): Pricing, Features & Honest Verdict

Reviewed by MakerStack · Published · 7 min read

TLDR

thestory.run is a LinkedIn writing coach for teams: an AI that asks questions, finds the story in a rough thought and structures your post, but never writes it for you. Verdict: the most honest answer to AI slop we have found. Best for: teams building employee voices on LinkedIn. Price: free for five, then 1 euro a session. Rating: 7.5/10.

What is thestory.run?

We found thestory.run on Product Hunt on 22 September 2026, where it launched as “A writing coach for corporate influencers.” It is a web app for people who post on LinkedIn under their own name at work: founders, salespeople, recruiters, engineers and experts. The name is always lowercase and written in full, and the product is still labelled beta.

The idea runs against almost every other LinkedIn tool. Taplio, Supergrow and the rest generate posts and make you their editor. thestory.run refuses to write. Its coach asks one question at a time, marks the lines you already wrote that carry the post, and offers an arc to write into. Outside one rationed exception, every published word is yours. It is built by Swat.io GmbH in Vienna, the company behind the Swat.io social media management suite, and it is a separate product from Swat.io itself.

What Are thestory.run’s Key Features?

A coach that asks instead of writing

You drop in a half-formed thought, such as “a lot of teams confuse doing a lot with progress.” The coach asks what that looked like, then what happened next, and follows each answer rather than running a form. Once it can say your point back in one sentence and you agree, it lays out an arc: open on the moment, name what is going on, then the pivot. You write into that structure. The whole thing feels closer to talking to a good editor than to prompting a model.

A review that quotes your own words

When the draft exists, the coach turns editor. It numbers what carries the post and what is waiting on you, suggests moving your strongest line to the top, and quotes your sentences rather than describing them. Every suggestion is reversible. An authorship bar shows how much of the post is yours. You can give the coach a name and one of three temperaments: steady, driven or sparring, and they respond differently to the same thin answer.

Cheat mode, on the record

Some weeks there is no post in you. Cheat mode lets the coach write one from your idea, your conversation and a few of your published posts so it matches your voice. It is rationed to one cheat for every four posts in your plan, never more than three a month, and the post is marked as coach-written for good and earns no streak. We like this. It admits the need without pretending the output is yours.

Team coordination without anyone reading your drafts

An admin or team lead sets a campaign, such as a hiring push, with a theme and a window, and the coach folds it into each person’s week. The team calendar shows who is posting on what and which days are empty, so everyone does not publish on Tuesday. Drafts, ideas and coach conversations stay private, enforced in the data layer, even from admins. There is SSO with Google or any SAML 2.0 provider, a Slack integration, an OpenAPI 3.1 REST API and an MCP connection.

EU hosting, and your writing never trains a model

Hosting, the database and the coach’s model calls all run in EU regions under the GDPR and the Austrian Data Protection Act. The data processing agreement says your writing is not used to train any model, by Swat.io or by its providers. An organisation can also plug in its own Anthropic API key, so the coach’s calls run on the company’s own contract. The API deliberately has no endpoint that drives the coach, so no agent can quietly write posts in your name through it. For a legal or compliance team, that is an easy sign-off.

What Does a Week in thestory.run Look Like?

Signup is a five-step conversation with the coach: your name, audience, topics and pace. After that, the home screen is a short to-do for the week, such as one post on leadership and a nudge to finish a draft you saved. Ideas go into a shelf where they cool down over time instead of piling up as guilt. A streak tracks if you are showing up, and a pause button silences everything during a week off.

When a post is ready, you connect your personal LinkedIn profile and publish from the app, schedule it for a day and time, or post by hand and tell the app it happened. Nothing goes out unless you press the button. The app works on a phone as well as a laptop, and every screen, including the coach, exists in English and German.

Where Does thestory.run Fall Short?

It is LinkedIn-first to the point of being LinkedIn-only for publishing. The app lets you log posts from any channel, but only a personal LinkedIn profile connects for direct posting and scheduling. We found no mention of company pages or X. The interface and coach cover English and German only, so a team in France or Spain writes in English or not at all.

It is also young. The public changelog starts in late July 2026, the site says pricing can still change, and the terms allow a yearly price rise in line with Austrian inflation. We found no LinkedIn reach or impression analytics described anywhere: progress is measured against the plan you set, not against how the post did. And the whole premise asks for effort: if a salesperson wants a post in 30 seconds, this is the wrong tool, on purpose.

How Much Does thestory.run Cost?

thestory.run is free forever for teams of five people or fewer, with no card and no trial clock. From the sixth person, you pay 1 euro per coaching session plus tax. A session is the coach working with you on one piece from rough idea to finished post. Logging in, planning, publishing and cheat mode do not use sessions. People, channels and every feature are included on both plans, and SSO is not an enterprise upsell.

Prepaying for a batch of sessions saves 10 percent, and prepaid sessions never expire. The calculator suggests 150 sessions for a six-person team, about six months at one post per person per week, for 135 euros. That is cheap. Supergrow’s Teams plan is $139 a month for four accounts, and Taplio starts at $39 a month for one person. A 20-person team posting weekly would spend roughly 80 to 90 euros a month here. Prices are in euros, and Stripe converts at checkout with a small currency fee.

Who is thestory.run Best For?

Use thestory.run if you run a company or a team that wants its people visible on LinkedIn without everyone sounding like the same AI. It suits founders, sales teams, recruiters and subject-matter experts who have things to say but freeze at a blank page. Small teams of up to five get the whole product free, which makes it an easy trial for a startup.

Skip thestory.run if you want posts written for you, need company-page publishing or multiple networks, or work in a language other than English or German. Skip it too if your main goal is audience analytics and growth tactics rather than writing better posts.

Best thestory.run Alternatives

Taplio

Taplio is an AI LinkedIn growth tool with post generation, scheduling, analytics and a lead database, from $39 a month per person. It does far more for reach and far less for your voice. Pick it if volume and analytics matter more than writing it yourself.

Supergrow

Supergrow generates and schedules LinkedIn posts, from $19 a month, with a Teams plan at $139 a month for four accounts. It is the closest team-focused rival, but it is a ghostwriter, which is exactly what thestory.run is built against.

Typefully

Typefully is a clean writing and scheduling app for LinkedIn, X and other networks, with a free plan to start. It gives you a good editor and multi-network scheduling but no coach. Pick it if you already write well and only need somewhere to draft and schedule.

Final Verdict: Is thestory.run Worth It?

thestory.run is a rare AI product with a clear point of view. It uses the model to ask better questions instead of producing more text, it keeps drafts private from managers, and its pricing is generous and simple: nothing for five people and 1 euro a session after that. The small touches, like cheat mode that labels itself and a pause that stops the guilt, show a team that has thought about how people actually write.

The limits are real. It publishes only to personal LinkedIn profiles, speaks two languages and is still in beta. But for a company that wants its people to post in their own voice, it is the best tool we have found for the job, and at this price there is little reason not to try it with five people. We give it 7.5.
